The 1st Annual Emerging Scholars Conference was held on Saturday, August 6, 2012 at the Durham Arts Council. Initially sponsored by The Renaissance Education Group, Inc., ESC 2012 included: 1) student workshops on healthy lifestyles, career development, and preparing for success, 2) a parent workshop facilitated by a Detroit, MI educator and expert in STEM education, and 3) a career panel of North Carolina based professionals and entrepreneurs.
In 2013, the 2nd Annual Emerging Scholars Conference took place on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at The Holton Career and Resource Center (Durham, NC). Attendees learned tips on how to academically succeed in the upcoming school year and strategies to prepare for college. Workshop foci included: college preparation, financial literacy, community and global services, and healthy living. A special "for parents only" workshop was offered as well. The conference keynote speaker, Ms. Megan McGlover (making her 2nd appearance), provided an open forum for students to discuss real topics concerning achievement and success with emphasis on the connection between healthy living and excelling in academics. Mr. Roger Shackleford (Director of Workforce Development at The North Carolina Department of Commerce) brought formal greetings from the State in support of the conference.

The Emerging Scholars Conference is provided to the Durham community as a FREE learning event for high school students and their parents. The conference includes a keynote speaker, exhibitors, special invited guests, and various workshops geared towards getting students excited about going back to, succeeding in, and graduating from high school. A series of parent educational workshops are also provided to help parents identify practices, tools, and strategies aimed at supporting their child's succes in the upcoming year.
